TETRA Radio for Critical Communications Is Vulnerable, Researchers Show
Security consultancy Midnight Blue has identified five vulnerabilities in TETRA, a radio standard used worldwide for critical communications such as emergency response, industrial equipment, military communications, transportation, and critical infrastructure. The research was funded through the NGI0 PET program. TETRA, or Terrestrial Trunked Radio, was standardized in 1995 by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. Despite its vital role, widespread deployment across over 100 countries, and its age, it had not been publicly examined for security flaws until Midnight Blue's investigation. They advocate for open systems that can be tested and improved by security experts rather than relying on secrecy. Midnight Blue first reported the TETRA:BURST vulnerability to the Dutch National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in December 2021. The PET (Privacy & Trust Enhancing Technologies) fund was established by NLnet.nl with support from the European Commission's Next Generation Internet program.
