Teachers Improving Students' Mathematical and Scientific Literacy Through TIMSS Perspective
At the Institute for Education, a two-day training titled "Mathematical and Scientific Literacy in Practice from the TIMSS Perspective" was held for primary and secondary school teachers. The aim was to enhance mathematics and science teaching by developing functional knowledge, critical thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge in everyday situations. Thirteen participants engaged in practical work, experience exchange, and analysis of specific tasks, viewing mathematical and scientific literacy from the perspective of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). By analyzing TIMSS sample tasks, participants explored different levels of thinking required, planned activities and tasks, created practical models, and analyzed them. A special segment focused on scientific literacy through small research projects and experiments, where students draw conclusions based on evidence, investigate phenomena from daily life, and connect scientific knowledge with real-world situations. The training also introduced TIMSS contextual questionnaires, which, besides providing data on student achievement, help understand various factors related to their educational experiences and outcomes. The Institute supports teachers in improving teaching practices and developing approaches that enable students to apply, connect, and use knowledge to solve problems.
