Fraudulent SMS Messages About a New WhatsApp Number

CERT.LV warns of a new campaign distributing fraudulent text messages (SMS), in which scammers impersonate people known to the recipient and ask them to use a new phone number on WhatsApp for further communication, claiming that the previous number no longer works. The aim of these messages is to gain the recipient’s trust and continue communicating with the scammer. During subsequent conversations, scammers may attempt to steal money, personal data, or other sensitive information. CERT.LV urges residents to remain cautious and not consider unverified messages trustworthy. If you receive such a text message, before contacting the number provided, verify the sender’s identity by contacting the person concerned through another trusted communication channel.
