Supporting Literacy for Roma and Egyptian Students Through New Educational Materials
Improving the basic reading, writing and reading-comprehension skills of students from the Roma and Egyptian communities was the focus of a consultation organized by the Institute for Education for representatives of 25 primary schools. The consultation aimed to improve the intensive literacy process and strengthen support for children’s learning through the exchange of experiences, the presentation of practical working models and new educational materials. The consultation was led by Anita Marić, an independent adviser for research and development in the education and upbringing of children with special educational needs and children belonging to minority peoples and other minority national communities at the Institute for Education. It was organized במסגרת the “Intensive Literacy Development for Children from the Roma and Egyptian Communities” program, implemented with the support of UNICEF Montenegro. The program focuses on improving the quality of education, developing every child’s potential and creating an inclusive environment that respects children’s rights and needs, with particular attention to children who require additional support in acquiring basic skills as a foundation for further learning and education. Branka Vukšić, a primary school teacher at “Nikola Đurković” Primary School in Radanovići, also confirms the importance of these materials for daily work with children. She has worked for 14 years in a satellite classroom in Lastva Grbaljska, where a large number of Roma and Egyptian students attend classes. The Institute for Education continues to develop and improve support models that contribute to more accessible and higher-quality education for every child, while respecting their individual needs, linguistic and cultural identity, and right to equal opportunities for learning and development.
