Krapović: Launching of Petar I Njegoš marks a new phase of modernization for the Montenegrin Navy

The launching of the first multi-purpose patrol ship 'Petar I Njegoš' in France represents an important moment for the Ministry of Defense, the Montenegrin Navy, and the overall defense system. This event confirms that strategic decisions and planned investments in defense capacities are turning into concrete and modern capabilities for the Montenegrin Navy. These ships will serve as vital instruments for protecting Montenegrin waters and coastlines, monitoring and controlling the maritime border, safeguarding critical national infrastructure, combating crime, as well as search and rescue, responding to marine pollution cases, and providing humanitarian aid. Importantly, their introduction enhances our ability to more effectively protect national interests at sea and respond to modern security challenges. For Montenegro, a maritime country and NATO member, a strong and modern Navy is not a matter of prestige but of security, protection of national interests, and responsible fulfillment of obligations. The ships will be equipped with a system for active defense, including modular construction allowing adaptation to various missions and future armament upgrades. They will carry two rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIB) for engaging boarding parties and special forces, and will feature various sensors including hull-mounted SONAR. A 'citadel' system will ensure crew protection against chemical, biological, and nuclear threats. Armament will include a 40 mm remotely operated gun and two 12.7 mm machine guns, with capabilities for UAV deployment and support for divers. I particularly want to emphasize that this is not just about acquiring two new ships. The operational introduction of 'Petar I Njegoš' and 'Petar II Njegoš' will significantly strengthen Montenegro's ability to patrol and monitor its waters in the Adriatic, improve protection of maritime and critical infrastructure, and respond more effectively to risks related to cross-border crime and other modern security challenges.
