23 August 2026 – A New Milestone for Personal Data Protection in the Republic of Moldova

The entry into force of the two laws marks an important step in modernizing and strengthening the national framework for personal data protection, in line with European standards and the Republic of Moldova's objectives of integration into the European Union. Law 195/2024 on personal data protection establishes a modern legal framework that reinforces the rights of data subjects and the responsibilities of data controllers. The importance of the new law is primarily reflected in the guarantees it offers individuals regarding the protection of privacy, dignity, and fundamental rights in a context where personal data are increasingly used by institutions, organizations, and in the digital environment. Law 160/2026 on the processing of personal data for the purpose of preventing and combating crimes sets specific rules and guarantees for the processing of personal data by competent authorities aimed at crime prevention and investigation. August 23, 2026, thus marks the beginning of a new phase for personal data protection in the Republic of Moldova – a phase based on clearer rules, increased responsibility, and stronger guarantees for data subjects. The National Center for Personal Data Protection will continue to inform, guide, and support authorities, organizations, and citizens in understanding and applying the new legal framework, contributing to the development of an institutional and social culture based on respect for the right to data protection.
