Zenović in the French Senate: Montenegro Can Prove the Credibility and Sustainability of the EU Enlargement Process
“Montenegro’s accession to the European Union can confirm that the enlargement process can be credible, sustainable and legitimate if it is based on reforms, results and trust between member states and candidate countries. Through our accession, we want to show that the European perspective remains credible, that reforms pay off and that enlargement, with clear criteria and political commitment, can be a successful joint European project,” said Montenegro’s chief negotiator with the European Union, Predrag Zenović, during talks with members of the European Affairs Committee of the French Senate. He added that accession would also confirm Montenegro’s foreign-policy, security and values-based orientation, as well as its belonging to the family of European nations with which it shares a common future. “In this regard, the Accession Treaty is not merely a legal act formalising membership, but a shared strategic goal and the culmination of the entire process,” Zenović stressed, adding that its conclusion would confirm the success of reforms in Montenegro, as well as the European Union’s ability to turn its political vision into a concrete result. During his visit to Paris, Zenović, together with Ivan Ivanišević, Director-General for the European Union at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, met with representatives of the French Senate and National Assembly, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the General Secretariat for European Affairs and the Élysée Palace. The visit is part of intensive political dialogue with French partners during the final phase of the accession negotiations, aimed at presenting the results achieved and strengthening support for Montenegro on its path to full membership in the European Union.
