Renovator: I have a disability, I am not disabled
A NATO initiative supporting the rehabilitation of injured soldiers by modernizing facilities, equipment, and treatment methods. The day before, I saw him demonstrate his rehabilitation progress to one of the Swedish physiotherapists mentoring her Ukrainian colleagues. After surgery and an initial period of physical recovery, he came to the rehabilitation center in April 2026. The rehabilitation center’s work exemplifies Renovator’s purpose: helping injured soldiers regain their independence and return to their lives. When I asked him what he had learned from rehabilitation, his answer was simple but meaningful: “I have a disability, I am not disabled.” Renovator is led by five countries, each responsible for a rehabilitation center as the “lead nation”: the United Kingdom, Norway, Lithuania, Sweden, and Latvia.
