Why Are We Important?
The Maritime Safety Authority is the entity you should contact for everything you need to know: about vessels, navigational routes, rules of conduct on the water, what to consider if you decide to go to the sea, what the law requires from you, what experience tells us, who you can rely on in case of an accident—all with the common goal that all participants in maritime traffic enjoy freedom of movement. Water is the foundation of life and all economic activities, a renewable and highly interactive substance in nature, a driver of sustainable development. Montenegro, with its water resources relative to its surface area, is among the water-richest countries in the world. Besides 293 km of coastline along the Adriatic Sea, it has 30 lakes of various sizes, including Lake Skadar, the largest freshwater reservoir in the Balkans with an area of 372.3 km², as well as about ten larger and numerous smaller watercourses. These natural potentials have historically led to the development of successful maritime activities, which have been a priority for decades, and today nautical tourism has positioned Montenegrin tourism among the fastest-growing economies in the region.
