Project Nyman: The Rescue Service Gains Experience in Ukraine
This is a task where we must work together, says Pierre Sannemo, firefighter at Södertörn Fire Department and employed by MCF as the incident commander for the delegation on the trip. Working with search and rescue in a peaceful country involves efforts after natural disasters or accidents, where the environment is dangerous but relatively controlled. On each visit, we hear stories about so-called double tap attacks, where Russia strikes again against rescue personnel already on site. Director General Anna Starbrink and Roman Prymush, Deputy Director General at SESU, also signed a new agreement in May between the Civil Defense Agency and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU). The agreement means that the Civil Defense Agency continues to provide expertise and donations, while SESU commits to coordinating and planning local activities for deeper learning in rescue operations together with the agency. Ukraine has experiences that are invaluable to us now as we build preparedness tailored to the consequences of war, says Anna Starbrink, Director General of the Civil Defense Agency.
