Open registration for funding
Annually, the Stichting allocates approximately two million euros to support strategic initiatives for the open information society, particularly for the development and popularization of open standards and (network-oriented) open source technology. Stichting NLnet supports a wide range of activities, from software development, standardization work, and educational material development to hackers festivals, digital civil rights activities, and the international development of open source software licenses. Projects requiring significantly more budget than what is possible through NLnet's open registration are advised to make an appointment with one of our staff to discuss possibilities. Stichting NLnet is an independent foundation that funds its activities through donations, legacies, and interest income from a substantial endowment established in 1997 through the sale of the Netherlands' first ISP. Currently, several dozen projects and organizations receive financial support, including the NLnet Labs research lab, IIDS research group (Vrije Universiteit), the Free Software Foundation, ThinkQuest, and Internet Society.
