Ibrahimović with UN Special Advisor for Prevention of Genocide: Importance of Prevention and Culture of Remembrance for Lasting Peace

During the session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, UN Secretary-General's Special Advisor for Prevention of Genocide Čalo Bejani thanked Montenegro for its continuous support to the Office of the Special Advisor, especially for its contribution to the adoption of the UN General Assembly Resolution on the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide. He emphasized the importance of further engagement on the agenda of genocide prevention and combating hate speech, as well as confronting the past as a crucial prerequisite for building stable and peaceful societies. The interlocutors expressed readiness to continue cooperation in areas of mutual interest, noting that regional stability and strengthening democratic values are of particular importance. Minister Ibrahimović stated that Montenegro, through its reforms and clear commitment to EU membership, affirms its belonging to shared European and universal civilizational values, highlighting the importance of prevention and education to prevent the recurrence of the most serious crimes in the future. Ibrahimović underscored that Montenegro supports UN mechanisms aimed at preventing genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, as well as principles of responsibility and respect for international law. He particularly pointed out the importance of a culture of remembrance, education, and the development of critical thinking, assessing that confronting the past, respecting final judgments, and fighting hate speech are key elements of lasting peace, reconciliation, and good neighborly relations.
