By adopting the Anti-Mafia Law, Montenegro made a historic step in the fight against organized crime and corruption
By adopting the Anti-Mafia Law, Montenegro has made a historic step in the fight against organized crime and corruption, as crime and corruption will no longer be a path to wealth that remains protected and in the hands of those who illegally acquired it. The essence of the law is clear: illegally acquired assets must be confiscated, and the state gains stronger mechanisms to seize the economic benefits of criminals' actions. It is particularly significant that the law, under clearly prescribed conditions and with judicial oversight, allows for the permanent confiscation of such assets even before a final court verdict in organized crime cases. This sends a clear message that crime will never again be a business model and that illegally acquired wealth cannot be hidden or preserved. The adoption of the Anti-Mafia Law has already caused a shake-up in criminal circles, as it is clear that the era in Montenegro where crime paid off and illegally acquired wealth could be preserved is coming to an end. The enactment of the Anti-Mafia Law also demonstrates, among other things, the very productive and responsible work of the Ministry of Justice, as well as fulfilling one of the key promises.
