New Information and Data Protection Commissioner takes oath of officeNew Information and Data Protection Commissioner takes oath of office 27 April 2026 The newly appointed Information and Data Protection Commissioner, Dr Reno Borg, on 22 April 2026 took the oath of office, marking the commencement of a new five year term in accordance with the Data Protection Act (Cap. Following the expiration of the term of office of the previous Commissioner, Dr Borg has been appointed Information and Data Protection Commissioner in terms of Article 11 of the Data Protection Act, as notified in the Government Gazette. The Minister for Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector, Jonathan Attard said “The taking of the oath of office by Dr Reno Borg marks an important moment in the continued strengthening of Malta’s data protection and information governance framework. His strong legal background and extensive experience, including his role as Malta’s first Financial Services Arbiter, equip him well to carry out this important office with independence, professionalism and integrity, in the interest of citizens, public authorities and the rule of law.” Dr Reno Borg has served as a lawyer for over 30 years. Throughout the years Dr Borg worked in the Office of the Attorney General, served as chairman of several state entities, Chairman of BOV and as arbiter under the Social Security Act. The Government reiterates its commitment to the protection of personal data, the promotion of transparency, and the effective enforcement of data protection and access to information rights in line with national and European legislation.
