Minister Ćulafić: The goal is to establish a functional and sustainable environmental protection system
Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development Damjan Ćulafić spoke at the Conference on the Environment and Climate Change – The Situation in Montenegro under Chapter 27, organized by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Montenegro. “The proposed network covers more than 44 percent of Montenegro’s territory, reflecting both the richness of our natural heritage and the responsibility we have to preserve it,” Minister Ćulafić said. He identified securing the necessary financial resources as one of the greatest challenges in fulfilling the obligations under Chapter 27 – Environment and Climate Change. According to preliminary estimates, more than €3 billion will be needed for the full implementation of the obligations under Chapter 27, including approximately €900 million to achieve air-quality targets and around €780 million to build wastewater treatment infrastructure. Speaking about establishing efficient waste-management infrastructure, ensuring the operational management of protected areas, strengthening inspection oversight and monitoring systems, and securing adequate human and financial resources, the minister noted that these efforts require continuous work and long-term commitment. “Allow me to reaffirm once again Montenegro’s firm commitment to fulfilling its European obligations, protecting its exceptional natural wealth, and ensuring a healthier and more sustainable environment for present and future generations,” Minister Ćulafić said.
