Envoys on working visit to Montenegro regarding amendments to the Law on Minority Rights and Freedoms

Envoys responsible for drafting the Joint Opinion with the Directorate General for Democracy and Human Dignity (DGII) stayed on a two-day working visit to Montenegro to prepare a joint opinion on the draft amendments to the Law on Minority Rights and Freedoms. The amendments to the law are expected to be reviewed by the Venice Commission during its autumn session in October. Minister of Human and Minority Rights Fatmir Gjeka presented the current challenges in the field of minority rights protection and enhancement to the envoys. The Minister expressed confidence that the text of the current Law on Amendments to the Law on Minority Rights will be improved in accordance with international standards, and that the envoys' visit will significantly contribute to the quality of the text. To directly assess institutional positions, gather additional clarifications, and collect necessary information for finalizing the opinion, the envoys held consultative meetings with representatives of relevant institutions and other stakeholders.
