Annually, the Stichting spends approximately two million euros supporting strategic initiatives for the open information society, particularly for the development and popularization of open standards and (network-oriented) open source technology. Stichting NLnet supports a wide range of activities, from software development, standardization work, and educational material development to hacker festivals, digital civil rights activities, and the international development of open source software licenses. NLnet offers six opportunities per year for smaller and startup projects (budgets between €0 and €30,000 with a maximum duration of one year) to apply for support. Stichting NLnet is an independent foundation funded through donations, legacies, and interest income from a substantial endowment established in 1997 through the sale of the first ISP in the Netherlands. Currently, dozens of projects and organizations receive financial support, including the research lab NLnet Labs, research group IIDS (Vrije Universiteit), the Free Software Foundation, ThinkQuest, and Internet Society.
